Cullen Houser

Spam Planet

Steaming heaps of generalized garbage, internet pop-up ads and digital distortions burn with neon hues and brood with thick black shadows in the anarchic disarray of Spam Planet: a collection of works on paper by artist Cullen Houser. The visual clutter is at times overpowering. Yet some images seem to come into focus as an inchoate order, suggesting the components of a machine beneath the chaos, which never actually reveals itself. Something teeters, lines fall off, or a collaged element intrudes into the scene, confounding any potential single narrative. This place is a mess. The few phrases amongst the images can’t be extruded, because they only make sense in the context of the disorder. What is to be gleaned from this dystopia is simply disorienting, and that is this work’s crucial, numbing point.
