JOSHUA PELLETIER

SOMETHING RANCID ABOUT YOU

Lumpy worm men, beady-eyed imps, and a blind Bugs Bunny are just a few of the aberrant characters that inhabit the emotive fever-scape that is Joshua Pelletier’s all new body of work, Something Rancid About You, a cathartic eruption of ink and mixed media works on paper.  Employed as a special contractor for the ultra-rich in the Los Angeles area, Pelletier has experienced first-hand the vast gulf in consciousness that lies between the “1%” and the majority of Americans.  Channeling that understanding into this series, Pelletier vents his frustration towards the inequities in our society that the covid-19 pandemic has helped to lay bare.  His trademark multivalent, and at times frenetic, mark-making congeals into readable forms: sad, deformed figures dripping and writhing in piles, toothy mega-beasts barking at the wind, warring cartoon enemies that collapse, weeping into each other’s arms as they come to a realization of their shared fears.  In Pelletier’s surrealistic world, the grotesque and the dull ache of generalized angst reigns supreme, but the full story can be read between the lines.
