BURB CONTEMPORARY

Burb Contemporary, often affectionately referred to as “The Burb”, is a hip new art venue located in a detached garage in Sacramento’s quaint McKinley Park neighborhood. At The Burb we work with emerging and established artists to curate solo exhibitions in our professional and intimate space.

A NEW KIND OF SPACE FOR ARTISTS AND ART ENTHUSIASTS

Each show at The Burb incorporates our hybrid physical/digital exhibition design- wherein the art is installed physically in the space for virtual exhibitions to be viewed online- conceived largely in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Founded in the summer of 2020 by two MFA post-grads looking for an exhibition space free from commercial pressures, at the Burb we encourage our artists to focus on what they are passionate about. Burb Contemporary’s context within a middle-class suburb with an enduring history of red-lining also offers a wellspring of content for site specific performances and installations. In addition to an exhibition, Burb artists are invited to share their thoughts on their work and process through THE BLURB, our official podcast.

FAQs

Who started the burb?

Fellow Mills College, Oakland MFA alumni, Rebekah Wilson Smith (MFA 2019) and Alex Rambler (MFA 2018) are two Sacramento based artists with diverging practices but a mutual love for all things art. Smith works primarily in soft sculpture and oil painting, while Rambler is a photographic sculptor and projectionist. Their work can be found at rebekahwilsonsmith.com and alexrambler.com.

how can artists access the space?

We have an open application, which is easily accessible via this link HERE, or found on the “Apply” page under the “Info” tab. The co-founders meet periodically to review artist submissions.

why did we start the burb?

The founders wanted to create an accessible space for emerging artist to hold solo exhibitions free from the commercial pressures of a traditional gallery. Making art is difficult enough- you shouldn’t have to jump through hoops to get it seen.

how can the public see a show?

Follow us on Instagram at @burbcontemporary and join our mailing list for upcoming show announcements. Currently we are only hosting virtual shows until further notice.

where exactly is the burb?

Since the Burb is located at a private residence, the address is not advertised. However, once in person viewings commence post pandemic, it is easy to find on opening nights via signs located on H and 38th Streets, headed away from McKinley Park in East Sacramento.

How Do I Schedule a Press Walkthrough?
